Hisakata no ama no kawara ni sumu tazu mo kokoro ni aranu ne o ya nakuramu
Do even the cranes that dwell on the banks of the River of Heaven cry out against their will?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga koi wa ama no hara tobu ashitazu no kumoi ni nomi ya nakiwatarinamu
Like the reed crane flying across the wide sky, shall my love go on crying only among the far clouds?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Imasara ni waga na wa tataji kawaraya no shita taku keburi kuyuri wabu to mo
Not now, so late, will I let rumor spread my name, though like the smoke smoldering beneath the tile kiln I smolder in my grief.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Moshio yaku ama no taku hi no honoka ni mo waga omou hito o miru yoshi mogana
Like the fires of the fisherfolk burning seaweed for salt, glimpsed faintly far away, if only I had some way to see the one I love, however faintly.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga koi wa hatsuyama ai no surigoromo hito koso shirane midarete zo omou
My love is like a robe printed with tangled patterns of mountain indigo from Hatsuyama; though no one knows it, I long in a tangle of thoughts.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ashihiki no yama ni sumu chō yamagatsu no kokoro mo shiranu koi mo suru kana
As one cannot know the heart of the rustics said to live deep in the mountains, so I love without knowing what is in my beloved's heart.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Okuyama no tazuki mo shiranu kimi ni yori waga kokoro kara mayoubera nari
Like one lost in the deep mountains with no path to follow, for your sake, who give me no hold, I seem to wander lost of my own heart's making.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Okuyama no sue no tazuki mo iza shirazu imo ni awazute toshi no he yukeba
As there is no path to the far end of the deep mountains, I cannot know where this will lead; the years pass by without my meeting my beloved.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shiramayumi isobe no yama no matsu no iro no tokiwa ni mono o omou koro kana
Like the unchanging green of the pines on the hills by the rocky shore, so unchanging is my brooding in love these days.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ashigamo no sawagu irie no ukikusa no ukite ya mono o omoiwataramu
Like the floating weed in the cove where the reed ducks clamor, shall I drift on in sorrow, brooding on love without end?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Okitsudori u no sumu ishi ni yoru nami no manaku mo omou ware zo kanashiki
Like the waves breaking on the rocks where the cormorants of the open sea make their home, I long without pause, and how sorrowful I am.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kamome iru ariso no susaki shio michite kakuroi yukeba masaru waga koi
As the tide rises over the sandspit of the rocky shore where the seagulls rest and it slips out of sight, so my love grows ever greater.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kaze fukeba nami utsu kishi no iwa nare ya kataku mo aru ka hito no kokoro no
Is it like a rock on the shore that the waves beat against whenever the wind blows? How hard and unyielding is the heart of the one I love.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ukishizumi hate wa awa to zo narinubeki seze no iwanami mi mo kudakitsutsu
Rising and sinking, I will surely turn to foam at last, like the waves breaking on the rocks of each rapid, shattering myself again and again.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yamakawa no seze no iwanami wakikaeri onore hitori ya mi o kudakuramu
Like the waves of the mountain stream seething on the rocks of every rapid, am I alone breaking myself to pieces?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Iwabashiru yamashita tagitsu yamakawa no kokoro kudakete koi ya wataramu
Like the mountain stream gushing over rocks and seething at the foot of the hills, shall I go on loving with my heart shattered?
