Au koto o kumoi no yoso ni yuku kari no tōzakareba ya koe mo kikoenu
Like the wild geese flying off beyond the clouds, our meeting has become something far away; is it because you have drawn so far off that I cannot even hear your voice?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Okuyama no kusa fuminarasu saoshika mo fukaki kokoro no hodo wa shiranamu
Even the stag tramples down the grasses deep in the mountains in search of his mate; I wish you would know the depth of the longing in my heart.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hami noboru ayu sumu kawa no se o hayami hayaku ya kimi ni koiwatarinamu
Swift are the shallows of the river where sweetfish feed as they swim upstream; so swiftly, then, shall I go on longing for you?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kimi ni koi urabure oreba akikaze ni nabiku asaji no tsuyu zo kenubeki
As I languish in longing for you, I am like the dew on the low reeds bending in the autumn wind, ready to vanish at any moment.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Aki no no ni oku shiratsuyu no asana asana hakanakute nomi kie ya kaeramu
Like the white dew that settles on the autumn fields, shall I vanish away each morning, frail and fleeting, and nothing more?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Aki no no no hana no chigusa ni mono omou tsuyu yori mo shigeki iro wa mienedo
Among the countless flowers of the autumn fields I am lost in longing; my longing is thicker than the dew upon them, though its color does not show.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Mono omowanu nobe no kusaki no ha ni dani mo aki no yūbe wa tsuyu zo okikeru
Even on the leaves of the grasses and trees in the fields, which know no longing, dew has settled on this autumn evening.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ashihiki no yama no onoe ni karu kaya no tsuka no ma mo naku midarete zo omou
Like the sedge cut and bundled on the mountain ridge, not for a moment's span does my heart cease to be torn with longing.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kikade tada aramashi mono o yūzukuyo hitodanome naru ogi no uwakaze
Better had I never heard it: the wind across the reed leaves on this moonlit evening, deceiving me into thinking you had come.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yūzukuyo obotsukanaki o kumoma yori honoka ni mieshi sore ka aranu ka
In the evening moonlight, already so dim, something showed faintly through a break in the clouds: was it you, or was it not?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Tsukikage no sore ka aranu ka kagerō no honoka ni miete kumogakureniki
Was it the moonlight or not? It showed faintly like a shimmer of heat haze, then hid itself among the clouds.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga koi wa momoshima meguri hamachidori yukue mo shiranu kata ni naku nari
My love is like the shore plover circling a hundred islands, crying as it goes off in a direction no one knows.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yo o samumi kamo no hagai ni oku shimo no tatoi kenu to mo iro ni idemeya
Like the frost that settles where the wild duck's wings fold on this cold night, though I should vanish away, would I let my love show? Never.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Karehatemu nochi shinobe to ya natsukusa no fukaku wa hito no tanome okikemu
Did you mean for me to remember you after all has withered? Like the deep summer grasses, so deeply did you lead me to trust in you.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ama no hara kaze ni ukitaru ukigumo no yukue sadamenu koi mo suru kana
Like a cloud drifting on the wind across the wide sky, the love I bear has no settled course.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hisakata no ama tobu kumo no kaze o itami ware wa shika omou imo ni shi awaneba
As the clouds flying across the heavens are torn by the fierce wind, so too am I in turmoil, for I cannot meet my beloved.
