- Kinyo Wakashu
Uramu tomo mirume mo araji mono yue ni nani ka wa ama no sode nurasuramu
Though I look upon the bay and grieve, there is no sea-pine weed, no chance to meet; why then should I, like a diver, soak my sleeves?
Koishisa o imo shirurame ya tabine shite yama no shizuku ni sode nurasu to wa
Does my beloved know this longing of mine, that sleeping on the road I wet my sleeves with drops from the mountain trees?
Kinyo Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisue
Uramu na yo kage miegataki yūzukuyo oboroke naranu kumoma matsu mi zo
Do not resent me; like the evening moon so hard to glimpse, I am one who waits for no ordinary break in the clouds.
Kinyo Wakashu - The Lady Kii of Princess Yushi's Household
Mikazuki no oboroke naranu koishisa ni warete zo izuru kumo no ue yori
Like the crescent moon breaking through, driven by no ordinary longing, I have forced my way out from above the clouds, from the palace itself.
Awanu ma wa madoromu koto no araba koso yume ni mo miki to hito ni katarame
While we cannot meet, if only I could doze for a while, I might tell people I had seen you in a dream; but I cannot sleep at all.
Hito shirezu naki na wa tatedo karakoromo kasanenu sode wa nao zo tsuyukeki
Without my knowing, a groundless rumor has been spread, yet my sleeves, never laid upon yours, are still wet with tears like dew.
Ajikinaku suguru tsukihi zo urameshiki aimishi hodo o hedatsu to omoeba
How bitter the months and days that slip uselessly by, when I think how each one takes me farther from the time we were together.
Tsurashi tomo omowamu hito wa omoinamu ware nareba koso mi oba uramure
Anyone else who would think you heartless would surely think so; it is only because I am who I am that I blame myself instead.
Samidare no soradanome nomi hima nakute wasuraruru na zo yo ni furinikeru
Like the sky in the season of long rains, only empty promises fall without a break, and the name of a forgotten woman has spread through the world and grown old.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Wasuraremu na wa yo ni furaji samidare mo ikade ka shibashi oyamazarubeki
The name of one forgotten will not spread through the world; even the long rains of May, how could they not let up for a while?
Amagumo no kaeshi no kaze no oto senu wa omowareji to no kokoro narubeshi
As no sound comes from the wind that blows back the clouds, no reply comes from you; it must be that you do not wish to be loved by me.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ashihiki no yama no manimani taoretaru karaki wa hitori fuseru narikeri
The withered trees fallen here and there across the mountains lie each alone; how bitter it is to lie alone like them.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Mikumano ni koma no tsumazuku aotsuzura kimi koso waga hodashi narikere
Like the green vines of Kumano that trip a horse's hooves, it is you, I find, who are the fetter that holds me fast.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Koritsumuru nageki o ika ni seyo tote ka kimi ni ōko no hitosuji mo nashi
What would you have me do with this grief, piled up like firewood I have cut? There is not a single carrying pole, not a single chance to meet you.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tsu no kuni no maroya wa hito o Akutagawa kimi koso tsuraki seze wa mieshika
Here in the land of Tsu, could I in my humble hut ever tire of you, like the Akuta River? It was you, rather, whose cruel shoals came into view.
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Aumi chō na wa Takashima to kikoyuredo izura wa koko ni Kurumoto no sato
Ōmi, the land whose name means a self that meets, is famed, they say, like Takashima; but where, then, is Kurumoto, the village of your coming here?
Kinyo Wakashu - Unknown Poet
