It must be because you do not wake in the night that you never hear it; how could the wind in the reeds fail to blow, night after autumn night?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Ogikaze wa fukaba i mo nede ima yori zo odorokasu ka to kikubekarikeru
Whenever the wind stirs the reeds, I should lie awake from now on and listen, wondering whether it is you come to wake me.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Tsurezure to aki no higoro no furu mama ni omoishirasenu ayashikarishi mo
As the long, idle days of autumn go by, I have come to understand even that strange, unexpected visit.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
I cannot say about you, but I will never forget, however many days go by, the meeting we had that autumn evening.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Seki koete kyō zo tou to ya hito wa shiru omoi taesenu kokorozukai o
Do you know that today, crossing the barrier, I have come to ask after you, out of a devotion that never ceases?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
I thought you had quite forgotten the road to meeting, the road to Ōmi; who, then, is this who crosses the barrier to ask after me?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Yama nagara umi wa kogu tomo miyako e wa nani ka uchide no hama o mirubeki
Though I may stay on the mountain and row across the lake, why would I ever look upon Uchide Beach to set out again for the capital?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Tazuneyuku ōsakayama no kai mo naku ōmeku bakari wasurubeshi ya wa
Was it all in vain that I sought you across the pass of Ōsaka Mountain? Could you forget me so completely that you pretend not to know who I am?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Uki ni yori hitaya komori to omou tomo ōmi no umi wa uchiidete miyo
Even if sorrow makes you wish to shut yourself away entirely, come out to Uchide and look upon the Lake of Ōmi.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Sekiyama no seki to mo ararenu namida koso ōmi no umi to nagareizurame
My tears, which not even the barrier on Barrier Mountain can hold back, must be what flows out and becomes the Lake of Ōmi.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Kokoromi ni ono ga kokoro mo kokoromimu isa miyako e to kite sasoimin
Let me put my own heart to the test as well: I will see whether you come here yourself and invite me, saying, "Come, back to the capital."
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
How astonishing! You had only just set foot on the mountain path of the Buddha's Law; who could it have been that invited you, saying, "Come, back to the capital"?
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Leaving the mountain, I have groped my way back onto the dark road of this world, all for the sake of meeting you just once more.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Nagekitsutsu aki no misora o nagamureba kumo uchisawagi kaze zo hageshiki
As I gaze in sorrow at the autumn sky, the clouds churn in turmoil and the wind blows fierce.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Prince Atsumichi
Even a faint autumn breeze fills me with longing; on a day when the whole sky clouds over like this, there are no words for what I feel.
Izumi Shikibu Nikki - Izumi Shikibu
Aki no yo no ariake no tsuki no iru made ni yasuraikanete kaerinishi kana
Unable to wait until the dawn moon of the autumn night had set, I went back home.
