- Senzai Wakashu
Waga toko wa Shinobu no oku no masugehara tsuyu kakarite mo shiru hito no naki
My bed is like a field of sedge deep in Shinobu, the land of hidden love. However much the dew of my tears falls on it, there is no one who knows.
Senzai Wakashu - Onakatomi no Sadamasa
Kimi kouru namida shigure to furinureba Shinobu no yama mo irozukinikeri
The tears I shed in longing for you have fallen like early winter showers, and so even Mount Shinobu, the mountain of hidden love, has turned to autumn colors.
Senzai Wakashu - Hafuribe no Narinaka
Ika ni semu Shinobu no yama no shitamomiji shigururu mama ni iro no masaru o
What am I to do? The lower leaves on Mount Shinobu, the mountain of hidden love, deepen in color with every shower that falls, just as my love shows more with every tear.
Senzai Wakashu - Hitachi
Itsushika to sode ni shigure no sosoku kana omoi wa fuyu no hajime naranedo
How soon the showers have come pouring onto my sleeves, though my love has not yet reached the season of early winter when such showers fall.
Senzai Wakashu - Kamo no Shigenobu
Asamashi ya osauru sode no shitakukuru namida no sue o hito ya mitsuran
How mortifying! My tears slip out from under the sleeve I press to my eyes and trickle away. Has someone seen where they have run?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Yorimasa
Though I muffle my sobs, my sleeves have already shown their crimson color. How unlike my heart's resolve these tears of mine are.
Senzai Wakashu - Kōkamon’in no Bettō
Onajiku wa kasanete shiore nureginu sate mo hosu beki nakina naraji o
If it comes to the same thing, then let this wet robe of false blame be soaked through once more. It is not, after all, a groundless rumor that could ever be dried out and cleared.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takafusa
As time flows on, it may yet be washed clean, and so, though others may dress me in this robe of false blame, I will never let it become my own.
Senzai Wakashu - Unknown Poet
I mean to hide my love from others' eyes, yet I cannot hold it back, and what spills over from my sleeves, I find, is my tears.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Muneie
Tsurenasa ni iwade taenan to omou koso aiminu saki no wakare narikere
When her coldness makes me resolve to let it end without ever speaking, that, I realize, is a parting that comes before we have even met.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Sueyoshi
Yosobito ni towarenuru kana kimi ni koso misebaya to omou sode no shizuku o
It was a stranger who asked me about the tears dripping from my sleeves, though you are the only one I wish would see them.
Senzai Wakashu - Jikkai
Even in my dreams she appears cold to me. Did I turn my nightclothes inside out only to end up resenting her? That was never my wish.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Koretsuna
Omoiizuru sono nagusame mo arinamashi aimite nochi no tsurasa nariseba
If this were the pain that comes after we had met and become lovers, at least I would have the comfort of memories. But I have never even met her, and so I have none.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Suetsune
Tomoshi suru hayama ga suso no shitatsuyu ya iru yori sode wa kaku shioruran
Is it the dew on the undergrowth at the foot of the hills, where hunters bear torches in the night, that drenches my sleeves the moment I enter? So too, no sooner have I stepped onto the path of love than my sleeves are wet with tears.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Ika ni sen Muro no Yashima ni yado mogana koi no keburi o sora ni magaen
What am I to do? If only I had a house at Muro no Yashima, where smoke is always rising, I could let the smoke of my burning love vanish into the sky among the rest.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
My love overflows, and I would ask someone: in the River Minase, whose very name says it has no water, can sleeves grow wet in water one has never even scooped up?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinzane
