- Sankashu
Yo no uki ni hikaruru hito wa ayamegusa kokoro no ne naki kokochi koso sure
Someone dragged along by the sorrows of the world feels like an iris pulled from the earth, a heart without any root.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no usa o mukashigatari ni nashihatete hanatachibana ni omoiideme ya
Once I have turned all the sorrows of this world into tales of long ago, would the orange blossoms ever bring them back to mind?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sora ni naru kokoro wa haru no kasumi nite yo ni araji to mo omoitatsu kana
My heart, drifting off into the sky, is like the haze of spring, and as the haze rises, so rises in me the resolve to live no longer in this world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo o itou na o dani mo sawa todome osate kazu naranu mi no omoide ni sen
Then let me at least leave behind the name of one who turned away from the world, and make it the keepsake of a self of no account.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shiba no io to kiku wa kuyashiki na naredomo yo ni konomoshiki sumai narikeri
To hear it called a hut of brushwood, the name sounds a sorry one, and yet it is truly the most delightful of dwellings.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka o somukihatenu to iiokan omoishiru beki hito wa naku tomo
Let me leave word that I have turned my back on the world for good, even if there is no one who will understand what is in my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuki nomi ya uwa no sora naru katami nite omoi mo ideba kokoro kayowan
Only the moon, hanging in the sky above, is a keepsake hardly to be relied on, yet if it makes you think of me, our hearts will meet through it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Suzukayama ukiyo o yoso ni furisutete ika ni nariyuku waga mi naruran
Crossing Suzuka Mountain, I have shaken off this weary world as something apart from me; what, I wonder, is to become of me now?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nanigoto ni tomaru kokoro no arikereba sara ni shimo mata yo no itowashiki
What was it that my heart still clung to, that now, all over again, this world should seem so hateful to me?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Odorokasu kimi ni yorite zo nagaki yo no hisashiki yume wa samu bekarikeru
It is through you, who rouse me, that I am able to wake from the long dream of this endless world of delusion.
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Narimichi
Odorokanu kokoro nariseba yo no naka o yume zo to kataru kai nakaramashi
Had yours been a heart that would not wake, there would have been no point in my telling you that this world is a dream.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yomosugara tsuki o nagamete chigiri okishi sono mutsugoto ni yami wa hareniki
Through that intimate talk in which we made our promise, gazing at the moon all night long, the darkness in my heart was cleared away.
Sankashu - Minamoto no Masasada
Sumu to iishi kokoro no tsuki shi arawareba kono yo mo yami no harezarame ya wa
If the moon of the heart that you said would dwell apart and shine clear should appear, how could even the darkness of this world fail to clear?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Inishie ni kawaranu kimi ga sugata koso kyō wa tokiwa no katami narikere
It is your form, unchanged from the days of old, that today, at Tokiwa, stands as the keepsake of all that remains the same.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Iro kaete hitori nokoreru tokiwagi wa itsu o matsu to ka hito wa miruran
When all the others have changed the color of their robes, how do people see me, left alone like an evergreen, unchanged: as a pine waiting for what day?
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Tamenari
Tachiyorite shiba no keburi no awaresa o ikaga omoishi fuyu no yamazato
When you stopped by, how did the sad charm of the brushwood smoke strike you here in this winter mountain village?
