Ie o izuru hito to shi kikeba kari no yado kokoro tomu na to omou bakari zo
Since I hear you are one who has left home and the world behind, I only thought you should not let your heart linger on a mere passing lodging.
Sankashu - Tae, courtesan of Eguchi (per the Shinkokinshū)
Yo o sutete tanisoko ni sumu hito miyo to mine no konoma o wakuru tsukikage
As if to say to the one who has left the world to live in the valley depths, look, the moonlight comes pressing down between the trees upon the peak.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kuyashiki wa yoshinaki kimi ni naresomete itou miyako no shinobarenu beki
What I regret is that, having grown close to you, whom I had no right to approach, I will surely find myself longing for the very capital I mean to cast off.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saranu dani yo no hakanasa o omou mi ni nue nakiwataru akebono no sora
Already brooding on how fleeting the world is, I hear the nue bird crying as it crosses the sky at daybreak.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Toribeno o kokoro no uchi ni wakeyukeba ibuki no tsuyu ni sode zo sobotsuru
When I make my way, within my heart, across the fields of Toribe, my sleeves are drenched with the dew upon the ibuki.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itsu no yo ni nagaki nemuri no yume samete odoroku koto no aran to suran
In what age, I wonder, will I ever wake from the dream of this long sleep and come at last to my senses?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka o yume to mirumiru hakanaku mo nao odorokanu waga kokoro kana
Though I see full well that this world is a dream, how vain it is that this heart of mine still does not wake.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Naki hito mo aru o omou mo yo no naka wa nemuri no uchi no yume to koso mire
Whether I think of those who are gone or of those who still live, I see all of this world as a dream within a sleep.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kishikata no mishi yo no yume ni kawaraneba ima mo utsutsu no kokochi ya wa suru
Since the world I knew in days gone by is no different from a dream, how could even the present feel to me like waking life?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Koto to naku kyō kurenu meri asu mo mata kawarazu koso wa hima suguru kage
Today, it seems, has ended with nothing done, and tomorrow too, unchanged, the light will flash past like a horse glimpsed through a crack.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Koenureba mata mo kono yo ni kaerikonu shide no yama koso kanashikarikere
The mountain of death, once crossed, from which none ever return to this world again: that is what is truly sad.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hakanashi ya ada ni inochi no tsuyu kiete nobe ni waga mi ya okuri okuran
How fleeting it is! When the dew of my life has vanished in vain, will they carry this body of mine out to the fields and leave it there?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuyu no tama wa kiyureba mata mo oku mono o tanomi mo naki wa waga mi narikeri
The beads of dew, even when they vanish, settle again; it is this body of mine that has nothing at all to rely on.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Areba tote tanomarenu kana asu wa mata kinō to kyō o iwaru bekereba
Just because I am alive today, I cannot count on it, for tomorrow this today will surely be spoken of as yesterday.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aki no iro wa kareno nagara mo aru mono o yo no hakanasa ya asajiu no tsuyu
The colors of autumn linger on even in the withered fields, yet the fleetingness of the world is like the dew on the sparse reed grass.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Toshitsuki o ikade waga mi ni okuriken kinō no hito mo kyō wa naki yo ni
How have I managed to pass so many months and years, in a world where someone here yesterday is gone today?
Sankashu - Saigyō
