- Sankashu
Yamazato ni kokoro wa fukaku irinagara shiba no keburi no tachikaerinishi
My heart went deep into that mountain village, and yet, like the rising smoke of brushwood, I turned around and went back home.
While I go on living, unable to cast off this self that is not worth keeping, will I lose my way once more in the long darkness?
Is it you alone who will lose your way, with darkness shut up inside a heart that has not truly let go of the world? No, I am the same.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nabete mina hare senu yami no kanashisa o kimi shirube seyo hikari miyu ya to
For the sorrow of all of us alike, lost in a darkness that never clears, you must be our guide, to see whether some light may appear.
However much I might wish to, how could I ever be your guide? It would be different only if you yourselves entered the path that the Buddha teaches.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka ni kokoro ariake no hito wa mina kakute yami ni wa mayowanu mono o
In this world, all those with feeling, like the moon that lingers at dawn, do not lose their way in the dark like this.
Only the heart to turn from the world is there in me; this darkness that never ends, like the dawn moon that will not set, I will ask you to clear away.
Shio nareshi tomaya mo arete uki nami ni yoru kata mo naki ama to shirazu ya
Did you not know that I am now a fisherwoman, a nun, whose brine-soaked hut has fallen to ruin, with nowhere to turn amid the bitter waves?
With no wave ever coming near the rush-thatched hut, I could see that it was far too forlorn a place for a fisherwoman to live.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yama orosu arashi no oto no hageshisa o itsu naraikeru kimi ga sumika zo
When did you learn to live with it, here in your dwelling, the violent roar of the storm that sweeps down from the mountain?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ukiyo oba arashi no kaze ni sasowarete ie o idenishi sumika to zo miru
I see this as the dwelling of one who, resolved to stay no longer in this weary world, was lured by the stormy wind to leave her home.
Sankashu - Taikenmon'in no Hyōe
Amakudaru na o fukiage no kami naraba kumo hare nokite hikari arawase
If you are the god of Fukiage, who bear the name of one descended from heaven, then blow the clouds away and let your light shine forth.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nawashiro ni sekikudasareshi amanogawa todomuru mo kami no kokoro naru beshi
Once the River of Heaven was let down to flow into the seedbeds; to hold that rain back now must likewise lie within the god's own heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kono yo nite kataraiokan hototogisu shide no yamaji no shirube to mo nare
While we are still in this world, let us talk together, cuckoo; and be my guide, too, along the mountain path of death.
Sankashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Hototogisu nakunaku koso wa kataraame shide no yamaji ni kimi shi kakaraba
Like the cuckoo crying, I too will talk with you in tears, when you come to the mountain path of death.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo no naka o itou made koso katakarame kari no yadori o oshimu kimi kana
To loathe the world and cast it off may well be hard, but you begrudge me even a night's lodging, a mere borrowed shelter in this passing world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
