Though I think you cold, I still long for you; it turns out this heart of mine simply will not do as I would have it.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tsuraki o mo omoishiru ya wa waga tame ni tsuraki hito shimo ware o uramuru
Do they know their own coldness? Not at all. It is the very one who has been cold to me who turns around and resents me.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kokoro o ba tsuraki mono zo to iiokite kawaraji to omou kao zo koishiki
You warned me that the heart is a cruel thing, yet your face seemed to say you would never change—and it is that face I long for now.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Asamashi ya mishi ka to dani mo omowanu ni kawaranu kao zo kokoro naramashi
How wretched—you no longer even remember that we once met. If only your heart were as unchanged as your face.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Aware to mo iubeki hito wa omoboede mi no itazura ni narinubeki kana
I can think of no one who would say of me, "How pitiful," and so I must surely waste away and die for nothing.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Koretada
Sa mo koso wa aimimu koto no katakarame wasurezu to dani iu hito no naki
It may well be hard for us to meet—but that there should be no one to say even "I have not forgotten you"!

Au koto no nageki no moto o tazunureba hitorine yori zo oihajimekeru
When I trace the root of this tree of grief at not meeting you, I find it first began to grow from my nights of sleeping alone.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Aritoki
Ōkata no waga mi hitotsu no uki kara ni nabete no yo o mo uramitsuru kana
Though the sorrow is for the most part mine alone, I have come to resent even the whole wide world.
