Toshi furedo kuchinu tokiwa no koto no ha o sazo shinoburan Ōhara no sato
Words that do not decay though years go by, the poems from Tokiwa, ever green, how fondly you must cherish them there in the village of Ōhara.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ie no kaze tsutau bakari wa nakeredomo nado ka chirasanu nage no koto no ha
My poems may not be worth handing on as the family's style, yet why did you not send out my idle words along with the rest?
Sankashu - Sōkū
Ie no kaze mune to fuku beki ko no moto wa ima chirinan to omou koto no ha
The words beneath the tree where the family's wind should blow most strongly, the eldest son's, are surely about to be scattered now.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ie no kaze fukitsutaekeru kai arite chiru koto no ha no mezurashiki kana
Worthy indeed of the family style that has come down on the wind, how splendid are the leaves of words now scattered forth.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ie no kaze fukitsutau tomo Waka no ura ni kai aru koto no ha nite koso shire
Even if the family style is blown down to us, it is only by words worth something, like shells on the Bay of Waka, that it can be known.
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Kinyoshi
Kogarashi ni ko no ha no otsuru yamazato wa namida koso sae moroku narikere
In the mountain village where leaves fall before the winter wind, even my tears, like the leaves, have grown quick to fall.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mine wataru arashi hageshiki yamazato ni soete kikoyuru takigawa no mizu
In the mountain village where the storm sweeps fiercely over the peaks, there comes, added to its roar, the sound of the rushing stream.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tou hito mo omoitaetaru yamazato no sabishisa naku wa sumiukaramashi
In this mountain village where I have given up hope of visitors, were it not for its loneliness, it would be hard indeed to live here.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Akatsuki no arashi ni taguu kane no oto o kokoro no soko ni kotaete zo kiku
The sound of the bell borne along on the storm at dawn, I hear it echoing to the very depths of my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mataretsuru iriai no kane no oto su nari asu mo ya araba kikan to suran
The evening bell I have been waiting for is sounding now; if I am still alive tomorrow, will I hear it once again?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Matsukaze no oto aware naru yamazato ni sabishisa souru higurashi no koe
In the mountain village where the wind in the pines sounds so forlorn, the cicadas' evening song adds loneliness to loneliness.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tani no ma ni hitori zo matsu mo taterikeru ware nomi tomo wa naki ka to omoeba
There in the valley, a pine too was standing all alone, though I had thought I was the only one without a friend.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Irihi sasu yama no anata wa shiranedomo kokoro o kanete okuri okitsuru
I know not what lies beyond the mountains where the evening sun goes down, yet I have sent my heart ahead to wait for me there.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nani to naku kumu tabi ni sumu kokoro kana iwai no mizu ni kage utsushitsutsu
Somehow, each time I draw it, my heart grows clear, as I see my reflection in the water of the spring among the rocks.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Mizu no oto wa sabishiki io no tomo nare ya mine no arashi no taema taema ni
Is the sound of water a friend to my lonely hut? It comes to me in every lull of the storm upon the peaks.
Sankashu - Saigyō
