- Shin Kokin Wakashu
Though I should vanish this very morning like the dew that weighs down the branches of the autumn bush clover, would I ever let my love show? Never.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Otomo no Yakamochi
Akikaze ni midarete mono wa omoedomo hagi no shitaba no iro wa kawarazu
Though my heart is tossed like bush clover in the autumn wind, lost in brooding, the lower leaves of the clover keep their color, and so my face betrays nothing.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takamitsu
Shall I, too, let my love show its color at last? Even the shinobu fern on the eaves, whose name means hiding, has turned to autumn red.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Minamoto no Arihito
Isonokami Furu no kamisugi furinuredo iro ni wa idezu tsuyu mo shigure mo
The sacred cedar of Furu in Isonokami has grown old, with dew and autumn showers falling on it, yet it has never changed its color; so too my long-hidden love has never shown itself.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kujō Yoshitsune
Waga koi wa maki no shitaba ni moru shigure nuru tomo sode no iro ni ideme ya
My love is like the autumn shower trickling through the lower leaves of the evergreen: though my sleeve be drenched with tears, would its color ever betray me? Never.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Go-Toba In
Waga koi wa matsu o shigure no somekanete makuzugahara ni kaze sawagu nari
My love is like the autumn showers that cannot dye the evergreen pine; and over the plain of Makuzu I hear the wind rising in turmoil.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jien
Has my weeping, like the cicada's cry, leaked out for others to hear? My sleeve, wet as with the dew of the grove, will not dry, until people come asking why.
Because the fire of love burns in me, though I keep it wrapped like fireflies in my sleeve, I long to speak of it, yet there is no one who asks.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Jakuren
Omoitsutsu henikeru toshi no kai ya naki tada aramashi no yūgure no sora
Have all the years I spent in longing been in vain? There is only what I picture in my mind, and the evening sky at dusk.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Go-Toba In
Tama no o yo taenaba taene nagaraeba shinoburu koto no yowari mo zo suru
O thread of my life, if you are to break, then break now. If I live on, my strength to keep this love hidden may weaken and fail.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
Wasurete wa uchinagekaruru yūbe kana ware nomi shirite suguru tsukihi o
Forgetting for a moment, I find myself sighing at dusk, though these months and days of love pass by known to no one but me.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
Waga koi wa shiru hito mo nashi seku toko no namida morasu na tsuge no omakura
No one knows of this love of mine. Little boxwood pillow, whose name speaks of telling, do not let spill the tears I hold back upon my bed.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Princess Shokushi
As I hide my love, my heart has not the slightest gap, and yet what still seeps out, I find, is my tears.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Kujō Kanezane
Tsurakeredo uramin to hata omōezu nao yukusaki o tanomu kokoro ni
Though you are cold to me, I cannot bring myself to resent you, for my heart still places its trust in what is yet to come.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Fujiwara no Koretada
Ame mo koso wa tanomaba morame tanomazu wa omowanu hito to mite o yaminan
Even rain, if you trust in shelter from it, will leak through. And if you do not trust me, then I shall take you for one who does not love me, and let it end, as the rain ends.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kaze fukeba towa ni nami kosu iso nare ya waga koromode no kawaku toki naki
Are my sleeves a rocky shore where the waves break over forever when the wind blows? They never have a moment to dry.
Shin Kokin Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
