Izuku nite kaze o mo yo o mo uramimashi Yoshino no oku mo hana wa chiru nari
Where then should I go to resent the wind, and the world as well? Even deep in the hills of Yoshino, they say, the blossoms fall.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Fukaku omou koto shi kanawaba komu yo ni mo hana miru mi to ya naran to suran
If the wish I hold so deeply were to come true, would I become, even in the life to come, one who gazes on the blossoms?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Suehiro
Oi ga yo ni yado ni sakura o utsushiuete nao kokoromi ni hana o matsu kana
In the last years of my old age I have moved a cherry tree into my garden, and still, as if to test my fate, I wait for its blossoms.

How long I have waited for the flowers to bloom on the Mountain of Rank, though I spent many years in the capital serving the Spring Palace.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Sanemori
Kasugayama matsu ni tanomi o kakuru kana fuji no sueba no kazu naranedomo
On the pines of Kasuga Mountain I hang all my hopes, though I am but a trailing leaf at the tip of the wisteria, of no account at all.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinyuki
Mono omou kokoro ya mi ni mo sakidachite ukiyo o iden shirube narubeki
Could it be that this brooding heart, going on ahead of my body, will be the guide that leads me out of this sorrowful world?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinmitsu
Kazu narade toshi henuru mi wa imasara ni yo o ushi to dani omowazarikeri
I who have passed the years as one of no account no longer even think, at this late hour, that the world is hard to bear.
Senzai Wakashu - Shun'e
Itsu tote mo mi no uki koto wa kawaranedo mukashi wa oi o nageki ya wa seshi
At any time the sorrows of my life have been the same, and yet in days gone by did I ever grieve over old age? Never once.
Senzai Wakashu - Dōin
Inishie mo soko ni shizumishi mi naredomo nao koishiki wa Shirakawa no mizu
Even in those days I was a man sunk at the bottom of the stream, and yet what I still long for is the water of the Shirakawa.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Iemoto
Aware chō hito mo naki mi o ushi tote mo ware sae ikaga itoihatsubeki
Though this life of mine, which no one pities, is hard to bear, how could I myself as well cast it off in disgust?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Morikata
Kazu naranu mi o ukigumo no harenu kana sasuga ni ie no kaze wa fukedomo
The drifting clouds of sorrow over this worthless self of mine will not clear away, though the wind of my family's learning still blows, as it should.
Senzai Wakashu - Nakahara no Moronao
Omoiyare toyo ni amareru tomoshibi no kakagekanetaru kokorobososa o
Imagine how I feel, like a lamp I have tended for more than ten years whose wick I can no longer raise, this heart grown thin and forlorn.
Senzai Wakashu - Ōe no Masanori
Yo no usa o omoishinobu to hito mo miyo kakute furuya no noki no keshiki o
Let others see that I bear in silence the sorrows of the world: look at the eaves of this old house where I live on, grown over with fern of endurance.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kinshige
Hiku hito mo nakute sutetaru azusayumi kokoro tsuyoki mo kai nakarikeri
Like a catalpa bow cast aside with no one to draw it, a man with no one to raise him up finds that even a strong heart is of no use.
Senzai Wakashu - Sugawara no Koretada
Ikade ware hima yuku koma o hikitomete mukashi ni kaeru michi o tazunen
Somehow I would rein in the colt that races past the crack in the door, the swiftly passing days, and seek the road that leads back to the past.
Senzai Wakashu - Nijōin no Mikawa no Naishi
Ima wa tada ikeranu mono ni mi o nashite umarenu nochi no yo ni mo furu kana
Now I simply count myself among the things that do not live, and pass my days as if in the world after death, before I am born again.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Moromitsu
