Onajiku wa sakisomeshi yori shime okite hito ni orarenu hana to omowan
If it is all the same, I will mark it with my rope from the moment it first blooms, and think of it as a flower no one else may pluck.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Asatsuyu ni nurenishi sode o hosu hodo ni yagate yūdatsu waga tamoto kana
While I am drying my sleeves, soaked by the morning dew, soon an evening shower comes to drench them again.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Machikanete yume ni miyu ya to madoromeba nezame susumuru ogi no uwakaze
Unable to wait any longer, I doze off hoping to see you in a dream, only to be roused by the wind rustling over the reeds.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsutsumedomo hito shiru koi ya ōigawa iseki no hima o kuguru shiranami
However I hide it, is this a love that others will know? Like the white waves of the Ōi River, slipping through the gaps in the weir.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Au made no inochi mogana to omoishi ni kuyashikarikeru waga kokoro kana
I once wished only that I might live until we met—how I now regret that heart of mine.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ima yori wa awade mono o ba omou to mo nochi uki hito ni mi o ba makaseji
From now on, even if I must brood without our meeting, I will never again give myself to one who will make me suffer afterward.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itsuka wa to kotaen koto no netaki kana omoishirazu to urami kikaseba
How galling it would be to hear her answer, "When did I ever do that?" if I were to tell her my grudge, that she knows nothing of my love.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sode no ue no hitome shirareshi ori made wa misao narikeru waga namida kana
Until the moment the tears on my sleeves were noticed by others, how calm and composed those tears of mine had been.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ayaniku ni hitome mo shiranu namida kana taenu kokoro ni shinobu kai naku
How spitefully my tears pay no heed to others' eyes; my heart cannot bear it, and all my effort to hide is in vain.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ogi no oto wa mono omou ware ka nani nareba koboruru tsuyu no sode ni okuran
Is the sound of the reeds really me, lost in brooding? Why else would the dew that spills from them settle upon my sleeves?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kusa shigemi sawa ni nuwarete fusu shigi no ika ni yosodatsu hito no kokoro zo
Like the snipe lying pinned down in the marsh amid the thick grass, then rising and flying away—why does your heart grow so distant?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aware tote hito no kokoro no nasake are na kazu naranu ni wa yoranu nageki o
May there be some tenderness in her heart to pity me, for this grief does not come from my being of no account.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ika ni sen ukina o ba yo ni tatehatete omoi mo shiranu hito no kokoro o
What am I to do? I have let my sorry name be bandied all through the world, yet her heart still knows nothing of my love.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Wasuraren koto o ba kanete omoiniki nani odorokasu namida naruran
I had long expected to be forgotten. Why, then, do these tears flow as if I had been taken by surprise?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Towarenu mo towanu kokoro no tsurenasa mo uki wa kawaranu kokochi koso sure
Not being visited, and the coldness of a heart that will not visit—both feel to me the same in their pain.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsurakaran hito yue mi o ba uramiji to omoishi koto mo kanawazarikeri
I had resolved not to blame myself for the sake of one who would be cold to me, yet even that I could not keep.
