I pray that the tears shed at Matsuyama may grow as deep as the sea and flow into the lotus pond of paradise.

Stilling the waters of my heart, where the waves would rise, I now simply wait for the lotus that is to bloom.
Yama fukami tsue ni sugarite iru hito no kokoro no oku no hazukashiki kana

Sankashu - Saigyō
Hana naranu kotonoha naredo onozukara iro mo ya aru to kimi hirowanan
These are leaves of words, not flowers, yet perhaps they may have some color of their own; please gather them up.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yo o sutete irinishi michi no kotonoha zo aware mo fukaki iro mo miekeru
It is precisely in the words of one who has cast off the world to enter the Buddhist path that deep feeling, and color too, can be seen.
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Omoiamari iiideshi koso ikemizu no fukaki kokoro no hodo wa shirarame
Only now that I have spoken, unable to hold back my love, will you know how deep my heart is, deep as the water of a pond.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Naki na koso shikama no ichi ni tachinikere mada aisomenu koi suru mono o
Groundless rumors have sprung up like a market in Shikama, though in this love of mine we have not yet even met.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsutsumedomo namida no iro ni arawarete shinobu omoi wa sode yori mo chiru
However much I hide it, it shows in the color of my tears, and my secret love spills even from my sleeves.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Warinashi ya ware mo hitome o tsutsumu ma ni shiite mo iwanu kokorozukushi wa
How hopeless it is: while I too keep hidden from others' eyes, I never force myself to speak, and all I do is wear out my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nakanaka ni shinobu keshiki ya shirukaran kawaru omoi ni narai naki mi wa
Will my efforts to hide it only make it more obvious, unused as I am to this new feeling that has changed me so?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Keshiki o ba ayamete hito no togamu tomo uchimakasete wa iwaji to zo omou
Even if people grow suspicious of my looks and question me, I am resolved not to let it all come out.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kokoro ni wa shinobu to omou kai mo naku shiruki wa koi no namida narikeri
Though in my heart I believe I am keeping it hidden, it is all in vain, for what shows so plainly are the tears of love.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Iro ni idete itsu yori mono wa omou zo to tou hito araho ika ga kotaen
It shows in my face, and if anyone should ask, "Since when have you been so lost in thought?" how would I ever answer?
Sankashu - Saigyō
