This royal journey—
though a thousand years should turn,
I'd see it again,
that a mountain monk like me
might meet so fine a time
Meaning
This royal progress I would wish to see again, though a thousand years should turn and turn, so that a mountain monk like me might meet with such a moment.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1092

Headnote: "On the road when the Cloistered Emperor was making a tour of temples, breaking off a branch of maple."
The poet says he would wish to see this royal progress again, though a thousand years should turn, so that a mountain monk like himself might meet with such a time. Expressing his joy at encountering the Cloistered Emperor's tour of temples, he hides the name of the maple, kaede, from the headnote in "chitose kaete mo."
According to the headnote, he composed it on the road during Cloistered Emperor Uda's tour of temples, after breaking off a branch of maple.
The poet, the monk Sosei, was a son of Archbishop Henjō. Taking holy orders, he lived at temples such as Urin-in. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, he is represented in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu by "Ima komu to iishi bakari ni nagatsuki no."

The first line, "Kono miyuki," means "this royal progress," with "miyuki" an outing of a retired or cloistered emperor.
The second line, "chitose kaete mo," means "though a thousand years should turn again," with "kaete" hiding the name of the maple, kaede, from the headnote.
The third line, "miteshi kana," means "how I wish to see it," with "teshi kana" expressing desire. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "kakaru yamabushi," means "a mountain monk such as this," humbly speaking of himself as a monk practicing in the mountains.
The last line, "toki ni aubeku," means "so as to meet with the time," rejoicing at having met so splendid an occasion as the Cloistered Emperor's progress.
