- Senzai Wakashu
Yoshi saraba namida ni kuchine karagoromo hosu mo hitome o shinobu kagiri zo
Well then, so be it: rot away with my tears, my Chinese robe. I dry you only so long as I must hide my love from others' eyes.
Worn out with longing, my life goes on even so; yet what cannot bear the pain, I find, are my tears.
Senzai Wakashu - Dōin
Kazu naranu mi ni mo kokoro no arigao ni hitori mo tsuki o nagametsuru kana
Though I count for nothing, I have gazed up at the moon all alone, lost in thought, as if even I had a heart that could feel.
Senzai Wakashu - Todo
Namida ni ya kuchihatenamashi karagoromo sode no hiruma to tanomezariseba
Would my Chinese robe have rotted away with tears by now, had you not given me hope of meeting in the daytime, when my sleeves have time to dry?
Senzai Wakashu - Nakahara no Kiyoshige
Karehatsuru ozasa ga fushi o omou ni mo sukunakarikeru yoyo no kazu kana
Thinking of the joints of the dwarf bamboo, now withered away, I find how few they were, the nights that lay between them, the nights we shared.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Narichika
Wakekitsuru ozasa ga tsuyu no shigekereba au michi ni sae nururu sode kana
So thick was the dew on the dwarf bamboo I pushed through on my way that even on the road to meet you, my sleeves are drenched.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Koretsune
Okite yuku namida no kakaru kusamakura tsuyu shigeshi to ya hito no ayamen
My tears fall on this grass pillow as I rise to set out; will people find it strange that dew should lie so thick upon it?
Senzai Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Namida o mo shinoburu koro no waga sode ni ayanaku tsuki no yadorinuru kana
In these days when I hide even my tears, the moon has come to lodge upon my sleeve, without a reason in the world.
Senzai Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Shinobikane ima wa ware to ya nanoramashi omoisutsubeki keshiki naraneba
Unable to hide it any longer, shall I now say that it is I and give my name? For she does not seem one who would cast the thought aside.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshimichi
If I am not one who would be loathed once she knew, why should I hide from her even my name?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yoshitsune
Izuku yori fukikuru kaze no chirashiken tare mo shinobu no mori no kotonoha
From where, I wonder, did the wind blow that scattered them, the leaves of the words we both kept hidden in the forest of Shinobu?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takafusa
Unable to bear my longing, I turned my robe inside out hoping to see her in a dream; had I not, I would not have drenched even the lining of my sleeves.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Yorimasa
Kurikaeshi kuyashiki mono wa kimi ni shimo omoiyoriken shizu no odamaki
What I regret again and again, like the thread wound round a spool of shizu cloth, is that my heart should have turned to you, of all people.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Moromitsu
Finding this self you loathe too wretched to bear, has even my heart now left me behind to stay close by your side?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takachika
Ajikinaku iwade kokoro o tsukusu kana tsutsumu hitome mo hito no tame ka wa
To no avail, without a word, I wear my heart away; and this hiding from others' eyes, is it really for her sake at all?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Mitsuyuki
Even my sleeves, drooping and soaked with crimson tears, have rotted away; were they still here, I would show him their color.
Senzai Wakashu - Wakamizu
