Nagareyuku mizu ni tama nasu utakata no aware ada naru kono yo narikeri

When I think of the drop at the root that seems to have vanished, who among us is not like the dew on the leaf tips, as fleeting?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Okuri okite kaerishi nobe no asatsuyu o sode ni utsusu wa namida narikeri
The morning dew of the fields where we left her and came home, what carries it onto my sleeves is, after all, my tears.

Have you entered the path opened by the prayers of those left behind, without having to climb the painful mountain of death?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nagori sae hodonaku sugiba kanashi yo ni nanuka no kazu o kasanezu mogana
If even what remains of her should soon pass away, how sad; would that we did not have to add up the count of the seven-day rites in this world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ato shinobu hito ni sae mata wakaru beki sono hi o kanete chiru namida kana
Thinking ahead to the day when I must part once more, even from those who remember her with me, I scatter tears.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Sakurabana chirijiri ni naru ko no moto ni nagori o oshimu uguisu no koe
Beneath the tree where the cherry blossoms fall and people scatter, the warbler's voice laments the parting.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Chiru hana wa mata kon haru mo sakinu beshi wakare wa itsu ka meguriau beki
The falling blossoms will surely bloom again when spring returns; but this parting, when will it ever come round to a meeting again?
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Nagonori
Aware shiru sora mo kokoro no arikereba namida ni ame o souru narikeri
The sky too, knowing sorrow, has a heart, and so it adds its rain to our tears.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aware shiru sora ni wa araji wabibito no namida zo kyō wa ame to fururan
It is not the sky that knows sorrow; today it must be the tears of the grieving that fall as rain.
Sankashu - Lady Shōnagon of the Retired Emperor's household
Kesa ika ni omoi no iro no masaruran kinō ni sae mo mata wakaretsutsu
How much deeper the color of your grief must be this morning, now that yesterday you parted once again, even from us.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kimi ni sae tachiwakaretsutsu kyō yori zo nagusamu kata wa ge ni nakarikeru
Having parted even from you, from today on I truly have nothing left to console me.
Sankashu - Fujiwara no Nagonori
