- Sankashu
Nami takaki yo o kogikogite hito wa mina Funaokayama o tomari ni zo suru
Rowing on and on across the high waves of this world, all people in the end make Funaoka Mountain their harbor.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Shinite fusan koke no mushiro o omou yori kanete shiraruru iwakage no tsuyu
Thinking of the moss on which I will lie when I am dead, I already know its loneliness, the dew in the shadow of the rocks.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuyu to kieba Rendaino ni o okuri oke negau kokoro o na ni arawasan
When I vanish like the dew, take me out to Rendaino and leave me there; in the name of that place I will show the longing of my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Ko no moto ni sumikeru ato o mitsuru kana Nachi no takane no hana o tazunete
Seeking the blossoms on the high peaks of Nachi, I have come upon the place where he once lived beneath the tree.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itodo ika ni nishi e katabuku tsukikage o tsune yori mo ge ni kimi shitauran
How much more deeply than ever, I wonder, you must yearn for the moonlight as it sinks toward the west.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nishi e yuku shirube to tanomu tsukikage no soradanome koso kai nakarikere
The moonlight that I trusted to guide me to the west only raised my hopes in vain from the sky, and came to nothing.
Sankashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Sashiirade kumoji o yokishi tsukikage wa matanu kokoro zo sora ni miekeru
The moonlight that did not shine in, but turned aside from its path through the clouds, did so because your heart, not waiting for it, showed plain in the sky.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hiromuran nori ni wa awanu mi nari tomo na o kiku kazu ni irazarame ya wa
Even if I am not there to hear the Law you will expound, how could I fail to be counted among those who hear of its fame?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsutaekiku nagare nari tomo nori no mizu kumu hito kara ya fukaku naruran
Though it reaches you only as a distant stream, the water of the Law must grow deep according to the one who draws it.
Sankashu - Jakuchō
Tera tsukuru kono waga tani ni tsuchi umeyo kimi bakari koso yama mo kuzusame
Fill with earth this valley of mine where I am building a temple; you alone could even bring a mountain down.
Sankashu - Shōkō
Yama kuzusu sono chikarane wa kataku tomo kokoro takumi o soe koso wa seme
Strength enough to bring down a mountain may be hard for me, but I will add the craftsmanship of my heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Tsuranarishi mukashi ni tsuyu mo kawaraji to omoishirareshi nori no niwa kana
A garden of the Law where I came to know that it could be no different, not in the least, from the days of old when many sat together to hear the Buddha.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Inishie ni moreken koto no kanashisa wa kinō no niwa ni kokoro yukiniki
The sorrow of having been left out of that assembly long ago was eased, my heart fulfilled, in yesterday's garden of the Law.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kienu beki nori no hikari no tomoshibi o kakaguru Wada no tomari narikeri
Here at the harbor of Wada, they hold aloft the lamps of the light of the Law that would otherwise go out.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Asakaranu chigiri no hodo zo kumarenuru Kamei no mizu ni kage utsushitsutsu
The depth of my bond with the Buddha, by no means shallow, is drawn up and made known to me, as I scoop the water of Kamei and see my reflection in it.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Arigataki nori ni ōgi no kaze naraba kokoro no chiri o harae to zo omou
If this is the breeze of a fan that meets with the precious Law, so rarely encountered, I would have it sweep away the dust of the heart.
Sankashu - The Retired Emperor
