Do they think of the moon moving westward as something that has nothing to do with them, those into whose hearts the teaching does not enter?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yamakawa no minagiru mizu no oto kikeba semuru inochi zo omoishiraruru
When I hear the roar of the water surging through the mountain stream, I come to know how life is pressed on and hurried away.
Sankashu - Saigyō

It is not in vain; it returns at once to enlightenment, the life that one casts away even for the sake of others.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Madoikite satori ubeku mo nakaritsuru kokoro o shiru wa kokoro narikeri
The heart that wandered so long that it seemed it could never be enlightened, what comes to know that heart is the heart itself.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yami harete kokoro no sora ni sumu tsuki wa nishi no yamabe ya chikaku naruran
With the darkness cleared, the moon that shines clear in the sky of the heart, is it drawing near now to the mountains of the west?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Chirimagau hana no nioi o sakidatete hikari o nori no mushiro ni zo shiku
Sending ahead the beauty of blossoms scattering in a whirl, the Buddha spreads his light across the seat of the Law.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Hana no ka o tsuranaru sode ni fukishimete satore to kaze no chirasu narikeri
Blowing the fragrance of the blossoms into the sleeves of those seated in rows, the wind scatters them as if to say, awaken.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kori mo sezu ukiyo no yami ni magau kana mi o omowanu wa kokoro narikeri
Never learning, I lose myself again in the darkness of this sorry world; what cares nothing for my own self is my very heart.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nori shiranu hito o zo kyō wa ushi to miru mitsu no kuruma ni kokoro kakeneba
Today I look on those who know not the Law as sorry indeed, for they set no heart upon the three carts.
