Chihayaburu kami ni mo aranu waga naka no kumoi haruka ni nari mo yuku kana
Though we are not gods, the bond between us has drifted as far away as the clouds of heaven.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Chihayaburu kami ni mo nani ni tatouran onore kumoi ni hito o nashitsutsu
Why compare it to the gods or to anything else, when it is you yourself who keep placing me far off beyond the clouds?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ukishizumi fuchise ni sawagu nihodori wa soko mo nodoka ni araji to zo omou
The grebe that rises and sinks, splashing in the deeps and the shallows, can surely find no peace even at the bottom of the water, I think.
Gosen Wakashu - Prince Atsuyoshi
Matsuyama ni nami takaki oto zo kikoyu naru ware yori koyuru hito wa araji o
I seem to hear the sound of high waves breaking at Matsuyama; yet surely there is no one whose love could rise over mine.
Gosen Wakashu - Fujiwara no Morifumi
Sashite ko to omoishi mono o mikasayama kai naku ame no morinikeru kana
I thought you would come straight to me holding it over you, but the umbrella was as useless as Mount Mikasa's name, and the rain leaked through.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Morume nomi amata miyureba mikasayama shirushiru ikaga sashite yukubeki
There are so many watching eyes about that, knowing it, how could I hold up the umbrella of Mount Mikasa and set out straight for you?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Nagusamuru koto no ha ni dani kakarazu wa ima mo kenubeki tsuyu no inochi o
If I did not cling even to your leaves of comforting words, this life of mine, frail as the dew, would vanish this very moment.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Hito shirezu matsu ni nerarenu ariake no tsuki ni sae koso azamukarekere
Waiting for you in secret, I could not sleep; and not only by you, but even by the moon lingering in the dawn sky, I have been deceived.
Gosen Wakashu - Hyōe
Tatsutagawa tachinaba kimi ga na o oshimi iwase no mori no iwaji to zo omou
If rumor were to rise like the Tatsuta River, I would grieve for your good name; so, like the Wood of Iwase, I mean never to speak of it.
Gosen Wakashu - Ariwara no Motokata
Uda no no wa miminashiyama ka yobukodori yobu koe ni dani kotaezaruran
Is Uda Moor perhaps Mount Miminashi, the mountain without ears? Why do you not answer even the voice that calls to you like the calling bird?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Miminashi no yama narazu tomo yobukodori nani ka wa kikan toki naranu ne o
Even if I am not Mount Miminashi, the mountain without ears, why should I listen, calling bird, to a cry that comes out of season?
Gosen Wakashu - Fifth Princess
Koiwabite shinu chō koto wa mada naki o yo no tameshi ni mo narinubeki kana
It is said no one has ever yet died of the pain of love; but I fear I may become the world's first example.
Gosen Wakashu - Mibu no Tadamine
Kage mireba oku e irikeru kimi ni yori nado ka namida no to e wa izuran
Because of you, who slipped away inside when you saw me, why is it that my tears come flowing outward?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Shirazarishi toki dani koeshi ausaka o nado imasara ni ware mayouran
Even in the days before I knew you, I crossed the Slope of Meeting; why is it that now, of all times, I lose my way?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Akazu shite makura no ue ni wakarenishi yumeji o mata mo tazunete shigana
We parted upon the pillow before our hearts were satisfied; how I wish I could seek out that path of dreams once more.
Gosen Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kagemoto
Oto mo sezu nari mo yuku kana suzukayama koyu chō na nomi takaku tachitsutsu
No sound comes from you, as if Mount Suzuka's bells had fallen silent, and you fade away; only the rumor that we have crossed that mountain together rises ever higher.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
