- Shui Wakashu
Kakikurashi yuki mo furanan sakurabana mada sakanu ma wa yosoete mo mimu
Let the sky darken and the snow at least come down; while the cherry blossoms have yet to open, I will gaze at it and imagine it is them.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Harukaze wa hana no naki ma ni fukihatene sakinaba omoi nakute miru beku
Spring wind, blow yourself out while there are still no blossoms, so that once they bloom I can gaze at them without a care.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Sakazaramu mono to wa nashi ni sakurabana omokage ni nomi madaki miyuran
Though they are surely going to bloom, why do the cherry blossoms already appear to me, too early, only as images in my mind?
Shui Wakashu - Oshikochi no Mitsune
Izuko ni ka kono goro hana no sakazaramu tokoro kara koso tazunerarekere
Where is there any place these days that the blossoms do not bloom? It is by the character of the place that we find ourselves seeking them out.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Sakurabana waga yado ni nomi ari to miba naki monokusa wa omowazaramashi
If cherry blossoms were found only at my house, I would never give a thought to anything I lacked.
Shui Wakashu - Oshikochi no Mitsune
Morotomo ni orishi haru nomi koishikute hitori mimauki hanazakari kana
I long only for the spring when we broke off the blossoms together, and so I have no heart to look at them alone in their full bloom.
Shui Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Morotomo ni ware shi oraneba sakurabana omoiyarite ya haru o kurasan
Since I did not join you in breaking off the boughs, must I spend the spring only thinking of the cherry blossoms from afar?
Shui Wakashu - Mibu no Tadami
Kasumi tatsu yama no anata no sakurabana omoiyarite ya haru o kurasamu
Must I spend the spring only thinking from afar of the cherry blossoms beyond the mountains where the haze rises?
Shui Wakashu - Jōzō
Ochikata no hana mo miru beku shiranami no tomo ni ya ware mo tachiwataramashi
So that I might see the blossoms on the far shore as well, should I, too, rise up and cross over together with the white waves?
Shui Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Mate to iwaba ito mo kashikoshi Hanayama ni shibashi to nakan tori no ne mo gana
To ask you to wait would be far too presumptuous; how I wish there were a bird here at Hanayama whose cry would say, "Stay a little while."
Shui Wakashu - Henjō
Uguisu no nakitsuru nae ni Kasugano no kyō no miyuki o hana to koso mire
Even as the bush warbler sings, I see the deep snow falling on today's outing at Kasugano as blossoms.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Tadanobu
Furusato ni saku to wabitsuru sakurabana kotoshi zo kimi ni mienu beranaru
The cherry blossoms that grieved at blooming unseen in the old capital will, it seems, at last be seen by you this year.
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Tadanobu
Harugasumi Kasuga no nobe ni tachiwatari michite mo miyuru miyakobito kana
Like the spring haze spreading everywhere over the fields of Kasuga, the people of the capital seem to fill the plain!
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Tadanobu
Yo no naka ni ureshiki mono wa omoudochi hana mite sugusu kokoro narikeri
The most joyful thing in the world, I find, is the feeling of spending time viewing blossoms with friends who share one's heart.
Shui Wakashu - Taira no Kanemori
Sakurabana soko naru kage zo oshimaruru shizumeru hito no haru to omoeba
The reflection of the cherry blossoms in the depths of the pond seems especially precious, for I think of it as the spring of one who, like me, lies sunk.
Shui Wakashu - Kiyohara no Motosuke
Azumaji no noji no yukima o wakete kite aware miyako no hana o miru kana
Having made my way through the gaps in the snow along the field paths of the eastern road, ah, how moving it is to see the blossoms of the capital!
Shui Wakashu - Fujiwara no Nagato
