Na ni tachite Fushimi no sato to iu koto wa momiji o toko ni shikeba narikeri
The reason it is famed as Fushimi, the village of lying down to gaze, is that the autumn leaves are spread out there as a bed.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Ware mo omou hito mo wasuru na arisoumi no ura fuku kaze no yamu toki mo naku
I will keep you in my thoughts—and you, do not forget me—never ceasing, like the wind that blows along the shores of the rocky sea.
Gosen Wakashu - Princess Kinshi
Ashihiki no yamashita toyomi naku tori mo waga goto taezu mono omou rame ya
Even the birds whose cries ring through the foot of the mountains—could they, like me, be brooding without a moment's rest?
Gosen Wakashu - Yamada Hōshi
Ima wa tote aki haterareshi mi naredomo kiri tachi hito o e ya wa wasururu
Though I am one for whom autumn has ended, wearied of once and for all, how could I ever forget the one who slips away like rising mist?
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Omoiidete kitsuru mo shiruku momijiba no iro wa mukashi ni kawarazarikeri
I came because I remembered, and not in vain—the color of the autumn leaves is just as it was long ago.
Gosen Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kanesuke
Mine takami yukite mo mibeki momijiba o waga inagara mo kazashitsuru kana
The peaks are so high that one would have to go there to see their autumn leaves—yet without stirring from here I have set them in my hair.
Gosen Wakashu - Sakanoue no Koreyuki
Matsu hito wa kinu to kikedomo aratama no toshi nomi koyuru Ausaka no seki
I hear the one I have been waiting for has come, yet only the new year crosses the Barrier of Ōsaka, the Hill of Meeting—he does not come to me.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Oriori ni uchite taku hi no kemuri araba kokorozasu ka o shinobe to zo omou
If ever smoke should rise from the fire you strike and kindle now and then along your way, I would have you remember me through the fragrance of my devotion.
Gosen Wakashu - Ki no Tsurayuki
Adabito no tamuke ni oreru sakurabana Ausaka made wa chirazu mo aranan
O cherry blossoms I broke off as an offering for one whose heart is apt to wander—at least until the barrier of Ōsaka, please do not scatter.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Omoiyaru kokoro bakari wa sawaraji o nani hedatsuran mine no shirakumo
Nothing can hinder the heart that reaches out to you across the distance—so why do you try to come between us, white clouds upon the peaks?
Gosen Wakashu - Tachibana no Naomoto
Futamiyama tomo ni koenedo masukagami soko naru kage o taguete zo yaru
Though I will not cross Mount Futami at your side, I send with you the image that lies in the depths of this clear mirror.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Shinano naru Asama no yama mo moyu nareba Fuji no kemuri no kai ya nakaran
Since Mount Asama in Shinano is said to be burning too, perhaps the smoke of Fuji I send you will be of little use.
Gosen Wakashu - Suruga
Kono tabi mo ware o wasurenu mono naraba uchimimu tabi ni omoiidenan
If on this journey too you will not forget me, then each time you strike this flint and glance at it, I would have you remember me.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Uchisutete kimi shi inaba no tsuyu no mi wa kienu bakari zo ari to tanomu na
If you cast me aside and go off to Inaba, my dewlike life will merely not have vanished yet—do not count on my being alive.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Oshi to omou kokoro wa nakute kono tabi wa yuku uma ni muchi o ōsetsuru kana
With no thought of regret at all, on this journey I have only put the whip to a horse already eager to be off.
Gosen Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Kimi ga te o kareyuku aki no sue ni shi mo nogai ni hanatsu uma zo kanashiki
Parted from your hand at the very end of autumn, as the grasses wither, I am like a horse turned loose to graze the moors—how sad it is.
Gosen Wakashu - Muma
