Kimi nakute chiri tsumorinuru tokonatsu no
tsuyu uchiharai iku yo nenuramu
With you gone the dust has settled on the wild pink; brushing the dew from it, how many nights have I lain awake?
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Ayanaku mo hedatekeru kana yo o kasane
sasuga ni nareshi yoru no koromo o
For no reason at all a wall has stood between us, night after night, though the robes of those nights had long grown familiar.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Amata toshi kyō aratameshi irogoromo
kite wa namida zo furu kokochi suru
For years now I have changed into bright robes on this day, and putting one on I feel as though tears were coming down.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Atarashiki toshi to mo iwazu furu mono wa
furinuru hito no namida narikeri
Taking no notice of whether the year is new, what goes on falling are the tears of one grown old.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Kamigaki wa shirushi no sugi mo naki mono o
ika ni magaete oreru sakaki zo
There is no marking cedar at this sacred fence—so what did you mistake it for, that you came breaking off sakaki?
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Otomego ga atari to omoeba sakakiba no
ka o natsukashimi tomete koso ore
Thinking this the place where the god's own maidens are, I followed the fragrance of the sakaki and broke off a branch.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Akatsuki no wakare wa itsu mo tsuyukeki o
ko wa yo ni shiranu aki no sora kana
A parting at daybreak is always a thing of dew; but this is an autumn sky such as the world has never known.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Ōkata no aki no wakare mo kanashiki ni
naku ne na soe so nobe no matsumushi
A parting in autumn is sad enough on its own; do not add your crying to it, pine crickets of the field.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Yashima moru kunitsumikami mo kokoro araba
akanu wakare no naka o kotoware
If the gods of this land, who guard its eight islands, have hearts of their own, let them judge this parting neither of us wanted.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Kunitsukami sora ni kotowaru naka naraba
naozarigoto o mazu ya tadasamu
If the gods of the land are to judge this from the sky, they will surely first call your idle words to account.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Sonokami o kyō wa kakeji to shinoburedo
kokoro no uchi ni mono zo kanashiki
I try today not to call the old days to mind, and hold myself back—and still, within, there is a sadness.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Furisutete kyō wa yuku tomo Suzukagawa
yasose no nami ni sode wa nureji ya
Though you shake me off and go today, will your sleeves not be wet at the many shallows of the Suzuka?
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Suzukagawa yasose no nami ni nure nurezu
Ise made tare ka omoiokosemu
Wet or not at the many shallows of the Suzuka, who is there who will send a thought after me as far as Ise?
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Yukukata o nagame mo yaramu kono aki wa
Ausakayama o kiri na hedate so
I would look after the road she has taken; so this autumn, mists, do not stand between me and Osaka hill.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Kage hiromi tanomishi matsu ya karenikemu
shitaba chiriyuku toshi no kure kana
Has the pine we trusted for its broad shade withered away? Its lower leaves are scattering, here at the end of the year.
Genji Monogatari - Murasaki Shikibu
Saewataru ike no kagami no sayakeki ni
minareshi kage o minu zo kanashiki
The pond has frozen to a clear bright mirror, and it is sad that the face I used to see is not in it.
