Haru no kuru ashita no hara o miwataseba kasumi mo kyō zo tachihajimekeru
On the morning spring arrived, as I gazed across Ashita Plain, I saw that the haze too, just like the spring, had begun to rise that very day.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Mimuroyama tani ni ya haru no tachinuramu yuki no shitamizu iwa tataku nari
Has spring already come to the valley of Mount Mimuro? I can hear the water flowing beneath the snow, striking against the rocks.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Kunizane
Yuki fukaki iwa no kakemichi ato tayuru Yoshino no sato mo haru wa kinikeri
Even to the village of Yoshino, where the snow lies deep and no footprints remain on the steep paths built along the rocks, spring has come at last.
Senzai Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Michi tayu to itoishi mono o yamazato ni kiyuru wa oshiki kozo no yuki kana
Though I once resented it for cutting off the roads, now that it is melting away in the mountain village I find myself sorry to see it go, this snow of last year.
Senzai Wakashu - Oe no Masafusa
Haru tateba yuki no shitamizu uchitokete tani no uguisu ima zo naku naru
Now that spring has come, the water under the snow has melted and flows freely, and the warbler in the valley seems at last to be singing.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akitsuna
Yamazato no kakine ni haru ya shirukaramu kasumanu saki ni uguisu no naku
Is the coming of spring so plain to see along the hedges of the mountain village? Even before the haze has risen, the warbler is already singing.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Takakuni
Keburi ka to Muro no Yashima o mishi hodo ni yagate mo sora no kasuminuru kana
As I gazed at Muro no Yashima, wondering if that was smoke rising, the whole sky, without a pause, became veiled in haze.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Kasumi shiku haru no shioji o miwataseba midori o wakuru okitsu shiranami
As I gaze over the spring sea-lanes where haze lies spread, I see the white waves of the open sea parting the green waters.
Senzai Wakashu - Kujō Kanezane
Wagimoko ga sode furu yama mo haru kite zo kasumi no koromo tachiwatarikeru
Spring has come even to Mount Furu, where my beloved waves her sleeves, and a robe of haze has risen and spread across it.
Senzai Wakashu - Oe no Masafusa
Haru kureba sugi no shirushi mo mienu kana kasumi zo tateru Miwa no yamamoto
Now that spring has come, even the cedar that served as a landmark can no longer be seen; haze has risen at the foot of Mount Miwa.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Yorisuke
Miwataseba soko to shirushi no sugi mo nashi kasumi no uchi ya Miwa no yamamoto
Gazing far across, I see no cedar to mark the spot and say, "there it is." Is the foot of Mount Miwa hidden somewhere in the haze?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takafusa
Tokiwa naru matsu mo ya haru o shirinuramu hatsune o iwau hito ni hikarete
Has even the evergreen pine, which never changes, come to know that spring is here, now that it has been pulled up by people celebrating the first Day of the Rat?
Senzai Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Urayamashi yuki no shitakusa kakiwakete tare o tōhi no wakana naruramu
How I envy them! For whom, and for the day of what visit, were these young greens gathered at Tobuhi, brushing aside the snow from the grass beneath?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Michitoshi
Kasugano no yuki o wakana ni tsumisoete kyō sae sode no shiorenuru kana
On Kasuga Plain I pluck the snow together with the young greens, and even on this day my sleeves hang soaked and drooping.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
Sakisomuru ume no tachie ni furu yuki no kasanaru kazu o toe to koso omoe
Snow is falling on the tall branches of my plum just coming into bloom; how I wish you would come and ask how many layers have piled up.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Toshitada
Umegae ni kokoro mo yukite kasanaru o shirade ya hito no toe to iuramu
Like the snow, my heart has already gone to your plum branches and piled up there; not knowing that, do you still tell me to come and visit?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Toshiyori
