- Senzai Wakashu
Nageke tote tsuki ya wa mono o omowasuru kakochigao naru waga namida kana
Does the moon tell me to lament, and so make me brood? Surely not; and yet my tears flow as if to lay the blame upon the moon.
Senzai Wakashu - Saigyō
Hisakata no tsuki yue ni ya wa koisomeshi nagamureba mazu nururu sode kana
Was it because of the moon that I first fell in love? Surely not; and yet whenever I gaze upon it, it is my sleeves that are wet with tears before all else.
Senzai Wakashu - Jakuchō
Tsurashi to mo uramuru kata zo nakarikeru uki o itou wa kimi hitori ka wa
I find I have no grounds to reproach you for your coldness; is it only you who shrinks from what is wretched? I too turn away from this wretched self.
Senzai Wakashu - Yūsei
Omoishiru kokoro no naki o nageku kana ukimi yue koso hito mo tsurakere
I grieve that I lack a heart that understands; it is because of my own wretched self that the one I love is cold to me.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takachika
Omou o mo wasururu hito wa sa mo araba are uki o shinobanu kokoro to mo gana
As for one who forgets even me, who loves so, let that be as it may; I only wish I had a heart that would not go on longing for such a cruel one.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Arifusa
Hakanaku zo nochi no yo made to chigirikeru madaki ni dani mo kawaru kokoro o
How vain it was to pledge ourselves even for the world to come, when the heart has changed already, before that time has even come.
Senzai Wakashu - Koremune no Hirokoto
Itowaruru sono yukari nite ika nareba koi wa waga mi o hanarezaruran
Though the one I love shuns me, why is it, I wonder, that love, because of its bond with that person, never leaves me?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Nakayori
Omoiamari uchinuru yoi no maboroshi mo namiji o wakete yukikayoikeri
Overcome with longing, I fell asleep at nightfall, and even the phantom in my dream, I found, was parting the waves of the sea road, going to you and back.
Senzai Wakashu - Kamo no Chomei
Toshi furedo ukimi wa sara ni kawaraji o tsurasa mo onaji tsurasa naruran
Though the years go by, this wretched self of mine will never change at all; and your coldness, I suppose, is the very same coldness as before.
Senzai Wakashu - Tsuchimikado no Saki no Saiin no Chūjō
Nageku ma ni kagami no kage mo otoroenu chigirishi koto no kawaru nomi ka wa
While I lay grieving, even my reflection in the mirror has withered; is it only the promise we made that has changed? No, I have changed as well.
Senzai Wakashu - Retired Emperor Sutoku
Toshi furedo aware ni taenu namida kana koishiki hito no kakaramashikaba
Though the years go by, my tears still overflow, unable to bear the depth of feeling; if only the one I love were moved like this as well.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Akisuke
Ima wa tada osauru sode mo kuchihatete kokoro no mama ni otsuru namida ka
Now even the sleeves with which I held back my tears have rotted away, and my tears fall freely, just as my heart would have them.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Suemichi
Okuyama no iwakakinuma no ukinunawa fukaki koiji ni nani midareken
Like the water shield floating in a rock-walled marsh deep in the mountains, its stems tangled in the deep mud, why have I, in my sorrow, become so entangled on love's deep road?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Shikishinobu toko dani taenu namida ni mo koi wa kuchisenu mono ni zo arikeru
Spreading my robe on the bed, I long for you again and again, and though my tears are more than even the bed can bear, love, I find, is a thing that never rots away.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Shunzei
Asayū ni mirume o kazuku ama dani mo urami wa taenu mono to koso kike
Even the fishers who dive for sea-pine weed morning and evening, I hear, never cease their gazing at the shore, their grievance; how much less can mine end, who never get to see you at all.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kiyosuke
Nani sen ni soradanome tote uramiken omoitaetaru kure mo arikeri
Why did I ever reproach you for raising empty hopes? Now there are evenings when I have stopped hoping altogether.
Senzai Wakashu - Jōsaimon'in no Hyōe
