The night is so cold that the foam floating on the river shallows froze before it could even vanish.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Katashiki no sode koso shimo ni musubikere matsu yo fukenuru uji no hashihime
Frost has frozen on the single sleeve she spreads to sleep alone—waiting as the night grows late, the Maiden of Uji Bridge.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Katashiki no sode mo kōrinu fuyu no yo no ame furisusamu akatsuki no sora
Even the single sleeve I spread to sleep alone has frozen—the winter night's rain pours down from the sky before dawn.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ashi no ha wa sawabe mo saya ni oku shimo no samuki yonayona kōri shinikeri
Night after cold night, as frost settles bright and clear along the marsh, the reed leaves have frozen stiff.

Otowayama yamaoroshi fuku ōsaka no seki no ogawa wa kōri shinikeri
Where the mountain wind sweeps down from Mount Otowa onto the Ōsaka Barrier, the little stream by the barrier has frozen.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Fuyu fukaki kōri ya itaku tojitsuramu kage koso miene yama no i no mizu
Has the ice of deep winter sealed it so completely? No reflection shows any longer in the water of the mountain spring.
