- Senzai Wakashu
Michisugara kokoro mo sora ni nagameyaru miyako no yama no kumogakurenuru
All along the road I gazed back absently into the sky, toward the mountains of the capital, and now they have vanished behind the clouds.
Senzai Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Sasa no ha o yūgure nagara orishikeba tama chiru tabi no kusamakura kana
When I break bamboo grass and spread it for my bed while dusk still lingers, jewels of dew scatter about my pillow of grass on the journey.
Senzai Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Aki
Ura tsutau iso no tomaya no kajimakura kiki mo narawanu nami no oto kana
Traveling from bay to bay, sleeping in a rush-thatched hut on the shore with a rudder for my pillow, I hear the sound of waves to which my ears are not accustomed.

Wata no hara haruka ni nami o hedatekite miyako ni ideshi tsuki o miru kana
Having come across the wide sea with waves stretching far between me and home, I look upon the same moon that rose over the capital.

Now that I have learned this sorrowful world holds nothing certain, wherever I am, I feel as though I were on a journey.
Senzai Wakashu - Prince Kakuhō
Obotsukana ika ni Narumi no hate naramu yukue mo shiranu tabi no kanashisa
How uneasy I am! Here at Narumi, what end awaits me? Such is the sorrow of a journey whose destination I do not know.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Moronaka
Hi o hetsutsu yuku ni harukeki michi naredo sue o miyako to omowamashikaba
Day after day the road I travel grows ever longer; if only I could think that the capital lay at its end, how happy I would be.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Nagonori
Kaku bakari aware naraji o shiguru tomo iso no matsugane makura narazu wa
Even with the passing showers, it would not move me so deeply as this, were I not pillowed on the roots of a pine by the shore.
Senzai Wakashu - Unknown Poet
Tsuki mireba mazu miyako koso koishikere matsuramu to omou hito wa nakeredo
When I look at the moon, it is the capital above all that I long for, though there is no one there I think is waiting for me.
Senzai Wakashu - Dōin
Ōsaka no seki ni wa hito mo nakarikeri iwama no mizu no moru ni makasete
At the Ōsaka Barrier there was no one on guard; it was left to the water trickling between the rocks to keep the watch.
Senzai Wakashu - Hafuribe no Narinaka
Koete yuku tomo ya nakaramu Ōsaka no seki no shimizu no kage hanarenaba
Will there be no companion to cross with me once I leave my reflection behind in the clear spring at the Ōsaka Barrier?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Sadafusa
Tabigoromo asa tatsu ono no tsuyu shigemi shibori mo aezu shinobu mojizuri
Setting out at dawn across the moor in my traveler's robe, I find the dew so heavy that I cannot wring my sleeves dry—a robe like the tangled print of Shinobu, as tangled as the feelings I hold back.
Senzai Wakashu - Kakuchū
Kaze no oto ni waki zo kanemashi matsugane no makura ni moranu shigure nariseba
I could never have told it from the sound of the wind, were it not for the shower that leaks down onto my pillow of pine roots.
Senzai Wakashu - Sanjō Sanefusa
Moshiogusa Shikitsu no ura no nezame ni wa shigure ni nomi ya sode wa nurekeru
Waking in the night at Shikitsu Bay, where seaweed for salt is spread, was it only the winter showers that wet my sleeves? No, my tears did too.
Senzai Wakashu - Shun'e
Tamamo fuku isoya ga shita ni moru shigure tabine no sode mo shiotare yo to ya
The showers leaking under the shore hut thatched with fine seaweed—do they mean for the sleeves of my traveler's sleep to drip with brine as well?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Nakatsuna
Kusamakura onaji tabine no sode ni mata yowa no shigure mo yado wa karikeri
On the very sleeve of my traveler's sleep, the midnight showers too have once again borrowed lodging.
Senzai Wakashu - Kojiju
