Mishimae ya Tamae no makomo migakurete me ni shi mieneba karu hito mo nashi
Like the wild rice of Tamae at Mishima Inlet, hidden in the water and unseen, so that no one comes to reap it, my love is hidden and no one comes to me.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Makomo ouru Yodo no sawamizu misabi ite kage shi mieneba tou hito mo nashi
In the marsh waters of Yodo where the wild rice grows, a film of rust lies on the surface and no reflection shows, and so no one comes to call.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ukinami no Ojima no ama no nureginu nuru to na iiso kuchihatsuru to mo
Like the fisher's robe at Ojima, drenched by sorrowful waves, I bear a false charge; do not say that I am wet with tears, even though I rot away at last.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Furusato no sugi no itaya no hima o arami yukiawade nomi toshi no henuramu
Like the cedar-plank roof of a house in the old village, its boards gaping wide, we have never come together, and the years must have passed.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kusa fukami sashimo aretaru yado naru o tsuyu o katami ni tazunekoshi kana
The grass has grown so deep and the house has fallen into such ruin, yet I have come seeking it, with only the dew as a keepsake of the past.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shinobugusa shinobi shinobi ni oku tsuyu o hito koso towane yado wa furiniki
Like the dew settling secretly on the hare's-foot fern, I weep in secret; you never come to call, and the house has grown old.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yado wa arete furuki miyama no matsu ni nomi tou beki mono to kaze no fukuramu
The house has fallen into ruin; does the wind blow, thinking only the pines of the ancient mountain are worth visiting?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Arenikeri tanomeshi yado wa kusa no hara tsuyu no nokiba ni matsumushi no naku
How it has fallen into ruin! The house where you once promised to come is now a field of grass, and by the dew-wet eaves the pine crickets cry, as if waiting.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Sato wa arete yado wa kuchinishi ato nare ya asaji ga tsuyu ni matsumushi no naku
The village is in ruins; is it because only traces remain of a house rotted away? In the dew on the low reeds the pine crickets cry.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Chigirikemu kore ya mukashi no yado naramu asaji ga hara ni uzura naku nari
Could this be the house of long ago where we pledged ourselves? On the moor of low reeds a quail is crying.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Yamagatsu no kakiho ni sakeru nadeshiko no hana no kokoro o shiru hito no naki
No one knows the heart of the wild pinks blooming by the fences of the mountain rustics.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shigure nomi Furu no kamisugi furinuredo ika ni semu to ka iro no tsurenaki
Only cold showers fall on the sacred cedars of Furu, now grown old; what am I to do, when your color never changes and you remain so cold?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Matsu yoi no fuke yuku dani mo aru mono o tsuki sae ayana katabukinikeri
It is hard enough that the evening of waiting grows late, and yet even the moon, for no good reason, has sunk low.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Ozasahara oku tsuyu samumi aki sareba matsumushi no ne ni nakanu yo zo naki
With the dew lying cold on the bamboo-grass moor, when autumn comes not a night passes that the pine crickets, whose name means waiting, do not cry; nor do I fail to weep in waiting.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Aki no ta no ho no ue ni sugaku sasagani no ito ware bakari mono wa omowaji
Like the threads of the spider weaving its web over the ears of rice in the autumn fields, surely no one broods on love as deeply as I.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kari no iru hakaze ni sawagu aki no ta no omoi midarete ho ni zo idenuru
Like the autumn rice tossed by the wind of the wild geese's wings as they alight, my thoughts were thrown into disorder, and at last my love came into the open.
