Iro o dani sode yori tsutau shitahagi no shinobishi aki no nobe no yūtsuyu
Even the color of my love passes from my sleeve, like the evening dew on the fields that tinged the lower clover leaves in the autumn when I loved in secret.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga sode no namida ni mo aranu tsuyu o dani hagi no shitaba wa iro ni denikeri
Even the lower leaves of the bush clover have turned color from mere dew, not the tears upon my sleeve.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Will the pampas grass in the fields of autumn clover, bowed of itself beneath the heavy dew, put forth its plumes and show itself at last?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
The one I wait for never comes, and yet, like pampas grass putting forth its plumes, my love has shown itself; how vexing is this love I bear.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Nadeshiko no hana ni okiiru asatsuyu no tamasaka ni dani kokoro hedatsu na
Like the beads of morning dew resting on the blossoms of the pinks, even if only now and then, do not set your heart apart from me.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kiku yori mo hito no kokoro wa hatsushimo no okiaezu iro no kawaru narikeri
More quickly than the chrysanthemums, a lover's heart changes color, before the first frost has even fully settled.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kiekaeri aru ka naki ka ni mono zo omou utsurou aki no hana no ue no shimo
Fading utterly, as if I barely exist, I sink in longing, like the frost upon the flowers of autumn as they wither.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Tanabata ni aranu waga mi no nazo mo kaku toshi ni mare naru hito o matsuramu
I am not the Weaver Maid of Tanabata, so why must I wait like this for one who comes so rarely in the year?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shinobi amari koishiki toki wa ama no hara sora tobu kari no ne ni nakinubeshi
When my longing grows past all bearing, I feel I will cry aloud like the wild geese flying across the wide sky.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kumogakure nakite yuku naru hatsukari no hatsuka ni miteshi hito wa koishiki
Like the first wild geese crying as they pass hidden in the clouds, the one I only glimpsed so faintly is the one I long for.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Like a deer crying unseen in the morning mist on the autumn moor, shall I go on hearing of you only faintly?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kogane horu Michinokuyama ni tatsu tami no inochi mo shiranu koi mo suru kana
Like the common folk who toil in the hills of Michinoku digging for gold with no thought for their lives, I love with no thought for my own.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Au koto no naki na o Tatsu no ichi ni yoru kanete mono omou waga mi narikeri
Though we have never met, false rumor rises; like one stopping at the Tatsu market with money in hand, I am already lost in longing before anything has begun.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Forgotten, I am withered with grief; yet what I truly regret is the name that rose when you came to me, as a Chinese robe is put on and cut.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Tsu no kuni no Koya no maruya no ashisudare madō ni narinu yukiawazu shite
Like the coarse reed blinds of a rough hut at Koya in the land of Tsu, our meetings have grown far between, and we never come together.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Has the long-ago time of our parting vanished like the dew? On the reed moor, in fields where no trace remains, only the autumn wind of weariness blows.
