Samushiro ni ikuyo no aki o shinobikinu ima hata onaji Uji no hashihime
How many autumns have I endured on my straw mat! Now I am just like the Maiden of Uji Bridge, waiting.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Konu hito o kanarazu matsu to nakeredomo akatsukigata ni nari ya shinuramu
It is not that I am determined to wait for one who will not come, and yet has the night not slipped into dawn?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Michinoku no Mano no kayahara kari ni dani konu hito o nomi matsu ga kurushiki
Like the grass on Mano's moor in Michinoku that someone might come to cut, I wait only for one who never comes, not even for a moment, and the waiting is hard to bear.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Mate to shi mo tanomenu hito no kuzu no ha mo ada naru kaze o urami ya wa semu
Since you never even asked me to wait, would I, like arrowroot leaves turned over by a fickle wind, show my resentment? Never.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shinobureba kurushiki mono o yama no ha ni sashiizuru tsuki no kage ni mienamu
Hiding my love is so painful that I would wish to be seen by you as plainly as the moonlight rising over the mountain's rim.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Urami wabi mataji to omou yūbe dani nao yama no ha ni tsuki wa idenikeri
Even on this evening, when, weary of resenting, I thought I would wait no more, the moon has risen once again over the mountain's rim.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Mate to shi mo tanomenu yama mo tsuki wa idenu iishi bakari no yūgure no sora
Even over the hill that never asked me to wait, the moon has risen; but you, who merely said you would come, leave me only this evening sky.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Waga sode ni oboezu tsuki zo yadorikeru tou hito araba ikaga kotaemu
Before I knew it, the moon had come to rest upon my sleeve; if anyone should ask me why, how could I answer?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Kazu naranu mi wa ukigumo no yoso nagara aware to zo omou aki no yo no tsuki
I, a person of no account, drift far off like a cloud, yet I feel a deep tenderness for the moon of the autumn night.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Tsukikage mo saya ni wa miezu kakikurasu kokoro no yami no hareshi yaraneba
I cannot see even the moonlight clearly, for the darkness of my heart, shrouding all, will not clear away.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Shirakumo no kie wa kienade nani shi ka mo Tatsuta no yama no na nomi tatsuramu
Though I would vanish like the white clouds, I do not; why, then, like the clouds rising on Mount Tatsuta, does only rumor of my love rise up?
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Adashino no kuzu no ura fuku akikaze no me ni shi mieneba shiru hito mo nashi
Like the autumn wind that turns the arrowroot leaves at Adashino, my grief cannot be seen, and so no one knows of it.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Karagoromo suso awanu tsuma ni fuku kaze no me ni koso miene mi ni wa shimikeri
Like the wind blowing in at the unmeeting hems of a Chinese robe, the pain of not meeting cannot be seen, yet it pierces me to the bone.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hototogisu naku ya satsuki no satsukiame no harezu mono omou koro ni mo aru kana
As the early summer rains of the fifth month, when the cuckoo sings, never clear, so these are days when my heart never clears and I brood on love.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hototogisu naku ya satsuki no unohana no uki koto no ha no shigeki koro kana
In the fifth month, when the cuckoo sings and the deutzia blooms, these are days thick with sorrowful words, like leaves.
Kinkaishu - Minamoto no Sanetomo
Hototogisu matsu yo nagara no samidare ni shigeki ayame no ne ni zo naku naru
Waiting for the cuckoo through the night as the early summer rains go on falling, I seem to cry aloud, as thick as the roots of the iris.
