Watatsumi ni nagare idetaru Shikamagawa shika mo taezu ya koiwatarinamu
Like the Shikama River that flows ceaselessly out into the great sea, shall I too go on longing without end?

Like the waves on the Kamo River of the mighty gods, how many times does my longing come rushing back? There is no end to it.

Like the birds on the sandbar in the cove at Muko Bay, seen morning after morning, you are the one I always long to see.

Like the fine seaweed of the rocky shore at Tago Bay, floating and swaying on the waves, such is my wavering love.

My love is like the towrope swaying at the Kako crossing; my wavering heart never comes to rest.

I had resolved to give you up and suffered so, yet now, so late, like the old spring in the moor, you make me trust in you again.

Kaze o matsu ima hata onaji Miyagino no motoara no hagi no hana no ue no tsuyu
Waiting for the wind to blow, I am now just the same as the dew on the blossoms of the sparse-stemmed bush clover in the fields of Miyagino.

Like the hisagi trees on the beach at Uchide, drenched by the waves rolling in from the open sea, have I spent the years only drooping in tears?

Kimi ni yori ware to wa nashi ni Suma no ura ni moshio taretsutsu toshi o henuramu
Because of you, not by my own choice, have I spent the years on Suma's shore, dripping with tears like the fisherfolk dripping brine over seaweed?

Suminoe no matsu koto hisa ni narinikeri komu to tanomete toshi no henuramu
Like the ancient pines of Suminoe, my waiting has grown long; you led me to trust that you would come, and the years have slipped away.

Sumiyoshi no matsu to seshi ma ni toshi mo henu chigi no katasogi yukiawazu shite
While I thought to wait like the pines of Sumiyoshi, the years have gone by, and like the slant-cut crossbeams of the shrine roof, we never come to meet.

Ika ni semu inochi mo shirazu Matsuyama no ue kosu nami ni kuchinu omoi o
What am I to do? I cannot tell how long my life will last, and yet this longing will not rot away, even should the waves surge over the pine-clad mount of Matsuyama.
