Hodo tōmi kayou kokoro no yuku kari nao kakinagase mizuguki no ato
Since we are so far apart, please still let your brush flow freely, leaving its traces, until our hearts can truly reach each other.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Itodoshiku uki ni tsukete mo tanomu kana chigirishi michi no shirube tagau na
As my sorrows grow ever deeper, it is on you that I rely. Do not fail to guide me along the path you promised.
Kakarikeru namida ni shizumu mi no usa o kimi narade mata tare ka ukaben
Who else but you could lift up and set afloat this sorrowful self of mine, sunk so deep in tears?
Tanomuran shirube mo isaya hitotsu yo no wakare ni dani mo madou kokoro wa
The guide you are relying on—I wonder, can it really serve? For my heart is bewildered even by partings within this one world.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Nagareizuru namida ni kyō wa shizumu tomo ukaban sue o nao omowanan
Though today you may be sinking in the tears that pour from you, please still think of the time to come when you will rise up again.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Saritomo to nao au koto o tanomu kana shide no yamaji o koenu wakare wa
Even so, I still trust that we will meet again, for this is not a parting that crosses the mountain path of death.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kono haru wa kimi ni wakare no oshiki kana hana no yukue o omoiwasurete
This spring it is parting from you that I find so hard to bear, so much that I forget even to wonder where the blossoms go.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kimi ga inan katami ni su beki sakura sae nagori arasezu kaze sasou nari
Even the cherry blossoms I meant to keep in memory of you once you had gone—it seems the wind is luring them away, leaving no trace behind.
Sankashu - Rokkaku no Tsubone
Mukashi mishi matsu wa oigi ni narinikeri waga toshi hetaru hodo mo shirarete
The pines I saw long ago have grown into aged trees, and by them I come to know how many years have passed over me too.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Take no oto mo ogi fuku kaze no sukunaki ni taguete kikeba yasashikarikeri
Where the sound of wind through the reeds is seldom heard, the rustling of the bamboo, when I listen to it as if it were the reeds, turns out to be graceful too.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yoyo fu tomo take no hashira no hitosuji ni tatetaru fushi wa kawarazaranan
Though ages may pass, like a bamboo pillar standing straight and single, may the resolve you have raised never change.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Awaretaru kusa no iori no sabishisa wa kaze yori hoka ni tou hito zo naki
The loneliness of this sad grass hut is that no one comes to call but the wind.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Aware nari yoriyori shiranu no no sue ni kasegi o tomo ni naruru sumika wa
How moving it is: a dwelling at the far edge of the moors, unknown to anyone even now and then, where I have grown close to the deer as my friends.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Yamamizu no itsu izu beshi to omowaneba kokoro wa sokute sumu to shirazu ya
Like the mountain stream, I have no thought of when I might come out, so do you not know that, lonely as I am, I live here with my heart grown clear?
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kage usumi matsu no taema o morikitsutsu kokorobososhi ya mikazuki no sora
Its light so faint, slipping again and again through the gaps in the pines, how forlorn it is, the sky with its crescent moon.
Sankashu - Saigyō
Kyō mo mata matsu no kaze fuku oka e yukan kinō suzumishi tomo ni au ya to
Today again I will go up the hill where the wind blows through the pines, hoping to meet the friend with whom I enjoyed the cool yesterday.
