- Senzai Wakashu
Through loneliness the moon's deep charm grows all the greater; the moon, I realize, is meant to be gazed at alone.
Senzai Wakashu - Kenshō
Ima yori wa fukeyuku made ni tsuki wa miji sono koto to naku namida ochikeri
From now on I will not watch the moon until the night grows late, for without knowing why, I found my tears falling.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Kiyosuke
What has become of those with whom I used to watch the moon? The moon itself has not changed at all from long ago.
I must leave before I have had my fill of you; if I come around to this world once more, do not change your face, O moon above the mountain rim.
Senzai Wakashu - Jōken
Hakanaku mo waga yo no fuke o shirazu shite isayou tsuki o machiwataru kana
How futile! Unaware that the night of my own life is growing late, I go on waiting and waiting for the hesitant moon of the sixteenth night.
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Nakamasa
Are those who have gone before me wandering lost in the darkness? How long will I too be able to go on gazing at the moon?
Senzai Wakashu - Minamoto no Nakatsuna
Nokori naku waga yo fukenu to omou ni mo katabuku tsuki ni sumu kokoro kana
Even as I feel that the night of my life has grown late with nothing left, my heart turns clear and still toward the moon sinking in the west.
Senzai Wakashu - Taikenmon-in no Horikawa
Ukigumo no kakaru hodo dani aru mono o kakure na hate so ariake no tsuki
Even while the drifting clouds cover you it is hard to bear; do not hide yourself away completely, O moon lingering into the dawn.
Senzai Wakashu - Emperor Konoe
Ko no ma moru ariake no tsuki no okurazu wa hitori ya yama no mine o idemashi
Had the dawn moon filtering through the trees not seen me off, would I have had to leave the mountain peak all alone?
Senzai Wakashu - Prince-Priest Kakushō
Koto no ne o yuki ni shirabu to kikoyu nari tsuki sayuru yo no mine no matsukaze
It sounds as though a koto were being played in tune with the snow: the wind through the pines on the peak on a night when the moon is cold and clear.
Does it want me to feel all the more the sorrow of its setting before I have had my fill? The moon grows clearer and clearer even as it sinks.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Nagakata
What am I to do? Nothing but the moon can console me in this sorrowful world, yet even before the moon I relied on, my tears have fallen.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Teika
Deep in the mountains, feeling the storm through the pines pierce to the bone, who might it be that wakes from sleep and gazes at the moon?
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Ietaka
Matsu hodo wa itodo kokoro zo nagusamanu Obasuteyama no ariake no tsuki
While I wait, my heart finds even less consolation: O dawn moon, so slow to rise over Mount Obasute.
Senzai Wakashu - Rokujo of Hachijoin
Is it because a heart weary of the world longs after the moon that it goes on sinking into thoughts of nothing but the mountain rim, where the moon goes down?
Senzai Wakashu - Jisshu
Sabishisa mo tsuki miru hodo wa nagusaminu irinan nochi o tou hito mo gana
Even my loneliness is soothed while I gaze at the moon; after it has set, I wish someone would come to visit me.
Senzai Wakashu - Fujiwara no Takachika
